Bill Ostrander from Chemung Valley Audubon Society will lead this walk through mature woods to a hilltop pond. Bring binoculars if you have them. The first half-mile of this hike has a steep uphill grade. From Rt. 17/86 in Big Flats, take exit 49. Turn south from the exit ramp and go to Olcott Rd. At T intersection, turn right on Rt. 64 (unmarked), and right again on Rt. 352. Turn left on S. Corning Rd., cross the river, and turn left on Steege Hill Rd. to find parking area on left, about one mile up.

Spring Bird Quest 2012

Join us again this year to celebrate birds and bird diversity on Land Trust protected lands. Come experience the stunning diversity of breeding birds this spring while also raising funds to protect critical bird habitat!
In late May, FLLT lands offer a birding spectacle without equal in the Finger Lakes. Resplendent in their breeding colors, birds have begun a season of song, courtship, foraging, and raising young.
Mark Chao, will lead participants on three guided walks on Land Trust protected lands. The walks are free but donations are strongly encouraged.
Saturday, May 26, 8:00 AM, Bird Quest at the Dorothy McIlroy Bird Sanctuary in Summerhill. Join us for a walk through this wetland complex which features a wide variety of bird species. From Cortland, follow Rt. 281 north to intersection with Rt. 90. Turn left (west) on Rt. 90 and follow for 5 miles to Lake Como Rd. Turn right on Lake Como Rd. and continue for about 2 mi to Fire Lane A. Make right onto Lane A to find parking area on right.
Sunday, May 27, 8:00 AM, Bird Quest at the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve. This preserve, located just 8 miles from downtown Ithaca features forest, field, and lake and a diversity of habitats for birds and other wildlife. From Ithaca, take Rt. 13 south to junction with Rt. 34/96. Continue south on 34/96 to hamlet of West Danby. Preserve entrance is on left, ½ mile past Sylvan drive.
Monday, May 28, 6:30 AM, Bird Quest at the Goetchius Wetland Preserve. This one is for the early risers! Enjoy an early morning at this preserve to see what birds are visiting. From Ithaca, take Rt. 79 east approximately 11 miles and turn left on Flat Iron Rd. Continue up the road approx. 0.5 mile and park on the shoulder of the road.
Monday, May 28, 8:30 AM, Bird Quest at the Roy H. Park Preserve. This preserve takes visitors through fields and forests and down to Six Mile Creek. From Ithaca, take Rt. 13 north to Irish Settlement Rd. Turn right and continue 1.5 miles past Hammond Hill Rd. The preserve parking area is on the left just past the southern end of Goodband Rd.
Mark will also be collecting pledges per bird species found on Land Trust protected lands throughout the weekend. We welcome you to pledge in support of Mark’s efforts or to visit Land Trust sites, count birds, and raise pledges yourself!

Talks and Treks: Paddle to the Cora Kampfe Dickinson Conservation Area

Join David Diaz, Land Trust Director of Land Protection, for a kayak or canoe paddle to this conservation area which features a portion of Staghorn Cliffs. See the staghorn fossils that are the namesake of these cliffs and learn about the Land Trust’s work at the south end of Skaneateles Lake. You must bring your own canoe or kayak and lifejackets. Please register for this paddle by calling 607-275-9487. Meet at the Town of Scott Family Park at the south end of the lake, just off Glen Haven Rd.
Work day with good company at Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Reserve
06/23/2012, 9am-1pm: NYS Rt. 34/96, Town of Danby
Help! The beavers have flooded the Yellow Trail, along the north side of the preserve! Through the generosity of the neighboring landowner, the Land Trust has permission to temporarily re-route part of the Yellow trail onto neighboring private land to avoid the flooded area. Volunteers are needed to help move a wooden foot bridge. Tools and work gloves will be provided, or bring your own. Meet at John Smith’s house at 2373 West Danby Road (a.k.a. NYS Rt. 34/96, in the hamlet of West Danby). Please bring your own lunch and water. Talks and Treks: Honeoye Inlet Paddle

Naturalist and educator Eric Cosman will explore the inlet and the south end of Honeoye Lake with us. This should be a wonderful place to see wildlife from turtles to bald eagles! Limited to 20 participants. Please call 607-275-9487 to register. You will need to bring your own canoe or kayak and lifejackets. Directions: Meet at the gravel parking lot at Muller Field Station. From Rte. 20A in Honeoye Village, turn left on County Rte. 36 or West Lake Road, just west of the village center, and follow past the end of Honeoye Lake. Look for the Muller Field Station sign on your left.
Talks and Treks: Butterflies and Bugs!

Especially for children and families! Cornell entomology graduate student Heather Connelly will help us find and identify the smaller creatures at this preserve. This is an easy walk through field and forest and down to Six Mile Creek. Children of all ages are welcome and must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Don’t forget water and snacks. From Ithaca, take Rt. 13 north to Irish Settlement Rd. Turn right and continue 1.5 miles past Hammond Hill Rd. The preserve parking area is on the left just past the southern end of Goodband Rd.
