The Finger Lakes Land Trust presents a new conservation success – a big win for open space and clean water! Watch the short video about our Otisco Lakeshore Conservation Project and make your gift to help save more sensitive lands and waters across the Finger Lakes region:
Help us protect land and water forever!
Thanks to the help of individual donors, and an innovative partnership with Onondaga County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Finger Lakes Land Trust saved over 2,000 feet of shoreline at the southern end of Otisco Lake!
The partnership is planning active restoration efforts, including the planting of native trees and shrubs that will filter runoff into the lake.
After restoration is complete, the beautiful shoreline property will be opened for low-impact public recreation. Hikers will find easily accessible trails with multiple scenic viewing points.
The landscape also provides prime wetland habitat for waterfowl, ospreys, and bald eagles – and myriad other species.
Onondaga County will eventually own the property subject to a perpetual conservation easement held by the Finger Lakes Land Trust.
It is the Land Trust’s second shoreline project on this eastern lake – visit our Otisco Lake Preserve which was opened in 2018.
The newly protected land will safeguard multiple creeks that flow into the lake, creating a lasting water quality buffer.
With your help, we can permanently protect more lakeshores, gorges, forests, and wetlands across the Finger Lakes region:
