How long have you been involved as a volunteer?
Since 2018
What is your volunteer role at the Finger Lakes Land Trust? What kinds of work do you do here?
I am a volunteer photographer.
Why do you volunteer?
I volunteer because the mission of the FLLT is close to my heart. I try to convey the beauty of the preserves and natural areas through my photos for others to see, especially for those who may not have the opportunity to see for themselves. The vital work the FLLT undertakes is paramount to preserving our biodiversity. In the words of Rachel Carson, “Conservation is a cause that has no end. There is no point at which we will say our work is finished.”
What’s your favorite FLLT activity and/or preserve, and why?
Two of my favorite preserves are the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve for bird watching, and the Sweedler Preserve.
My favorite FLLT activity is exploring, hiking and photographing the preserves and natural areas. I also enjoy the hikes I’ve taken with friends or relatives interested in exploring the preserves for the first time and learning more about the FLLT.
Anything else you want to add?
I find the outdoors to be healing and rejuvenating, not only for the mind, but for the body as well. I am grateful to live in an area where I can step into a beautiful natural area just a few miles from my door. Again, in the words of Rachel Carson, “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.”
Many thanks to the FLLT and their outstanding accomplishments and continued dedication to preserving our land and water. We are very fortunate to have them.
