Ten New Locations Added to Go Finger Lakes— The Finger Lakes Land Trust’s Recreation Web Site

The Finger Lakes Land Trust recently added ten new locations to its outdoor recreation web site, GoFingerLakes.org. Go Finger Lakes is offered as a free public service to help residents and visitors discover the best locations in the region for hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, and other outdoor activities.

Locations on the shore of Lake Ontario in Monroe and Wayne counties were chosen for their unique outdoor recreation opportunities, as well as several others in the region.

The complete list includes:

  • Braddock Bay Wetland Complex, a 3,322-acre complex of wetlands, ponds, and marshland northwest of Rochester, popular among birdwatchers;
  • Chimney Bluffs State Park, a picturesque state park on the shore of Lake Ontario which features distinctive chimney-like bluffs.
  • Cornwall Preserve, a 77-acre nature preserve on Lake Ontario that offers delightful examples of the natural and agrarian history of the region;
  • Durand Eastman Park, a Monroe County Park featuring 5,000 feet of Lake Ontario waterfront and 1,260 total acres with a sandy beach, bike trail, hiking trails, an arboretum, and much more;
  • Erie Canalway Trail (Fairport to Pittsford), miles of unbroken stone dust trail, where intersecting roads pass over the canal and towpath;
  • Fair Haven Beach Park, an ideal state park for families on Lake Ontario with a variety of activities such as hiking, camping, swimming, and paddling;
  • Mendon Ponds Park, the largest park in Monroe County featuring roughly 40 miles of hiking trails, cycling, canoeing/kayaking, and more;
  • Old Erie Canal State Historic Park, a multiuse recreation corridor containing that follows the enlarged canal route from its western terminus at Butternut Creek in Dewitt to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum;
  • Sterling Nature Center, a true gem on Lake Ontario that has a bit of something for all including bluffs, ocean-like views, roughly 2 miles of pebble beaches, and more;
  • Waterman Conservation Education Center, this nature center in Owego houses live animal residents, a reference library, hiking trails, educational displays, and much more.

Go Finger Lakes features over 75 locations across 14 counties, primarily within the Finger Lakes region of New York State.  It is a mobile-ready site with a searchable map, scenic videos, photo galleries, driving directions, and trail descriptions. Site users will find state forests and parks, nature centers, rail trails, and other prime conservation lands available for public recreation, including popular segments of the Finger Lakes Trail.
